Jimmy Johnson classic NFL draft pick values (picks 1–224)
1. Select your chart. Use the NFL Draft Chart for real NFL draft pick trades (the Jimmy Johnson classic). Use the Dynasty Rookie charts for fantasy dynasty league rookie draft pick trades.
2. Find your picks. Use the search bar to jump to a specific pick number, or scroll through the table. Each pick shows its numeric value.
3. Compare trade sides. Add up the values of the picks on each side of a trade. The side with the higher total is getting more value. A difference of more than 10% usually means the trade is lopsided.
Example: If you're offered pick 1.05 (1700 pts) for picks 1.10 (1300 pts) and 2.05 (~546 pts), the other side totals 1846 — so they're overpaying slightly. Pick value charts are a guide, not a rule — adjust for your league's depth and talent pool.
The Jimmy Johnson draft pick value chart was developed in the early 1990s by the former Dallas Cowboys coach and his staff. It assigns a numeric value to every pick in the NFL Draft — pick 1 is worth 3000 points, and the values decay steeply so that early picks are worth far more than late picks. The chart was originally used to evaluate draft-day trades, helping teams decide whether moving up or down was worth the cost.
Three decades later, the Johnson chart remains the most widely referenced draft trade chart in football. NFL front offices, media analysts, and fantasy managers all use it as a baseline for pick-for-pick trades. While modern analytics have produced alternative charts (the Harvard chart, the Stuart chart) that value late picks more aggressively, the Johnson chart's simplicity and historical weight keep it the default.
For fantasy dynasty leagues, the chart is adapted: rookie draft picks use a gentler decay because fantasy rosters are smaller and late rookie picks still carry breakout potential. Fantasy365 provides both the classic NFL chart and dynasty-specific rookie pick values so you can evaluate trades in either format.
The classic Jimmy Johnson chart spans all 224 picks (7 rounds × 32). Here's how value decays round by round, with the top and bottom pick value in each round.
| Round | Pick Range | Top Value | Bottom Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Picks 1–32 | 3,000 | 580 | Most valuable picks. Top 5 picks exceed 2000 points; the 1.01 is worth 5× a late first. |
| Round 2 | Picks 33–64 | 1,260 | 244 | Worth ~42% of round 1 equivalents. Early seconds can fetch starters; late seconds are depth pieces. |
| Round 3 | Picks 65–96 | 819 | 158 | Worth ~27% of round 1. Day 2 picks — starters with developmental upside. |
| Round 4 | Picks 97–128 | 532 | 103 | Worth ~18% of round 1. Role players and special teams contributors. |
| Round 5 | Picks 129–160 | 346 | 67 | Worth ~12% of round 1. Depth and developmental prospects. |
| Round 6 | Picks 161–192 | 225 | 43 | Worth ~8% of round 1. Lottery tickets — most don't make rosters. |
| Round 7 | Picks 193–224 | 146 | 28 | Worth ~5% of round 1. Camp bodies and priority UDFA types. |
Dynasty fantasy leagues hold annual rookie drafts (typically 3 rounds, 12 picks each). Rookie pick values decay more gently than NFL picks because fantasy rosters are smaller and late picks can still hit. Here's the value breakdown by round.
| Round | Pick Range | Top Value | Bottom Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Picks 1–12 | 100 | 27 | Elite rookie prospects. The 1.01 (generally a top QB or RB) is worth 4× the 1.12. |
| Round 2 | Picks 13–24 | 24 | 6 | High-upside prospects — often the second tier at premium positions. |
| Round 3 | Picks 25–36 | 5 | 1 | Lottery tickets. Most don't make fantasy lineups, but breakout hits happen. |
Adding up pick values. When evaluating a pick-for-pick trade, add the values of each side's picks. The side with the higher total is receiving more value. A difference of more than 10–15% usually indicates a lopsided deal. For example, trading pick 1.05 (1700 pts) for picks 1.10 (1300 pts) and 2.05 (~546 pts) gives the receiving side 1846 total — a slight overpay.
Picks vs players. Pick value charts measure picks against picks. To trade picks for players, you need a player value chart too — Fantasy365's Trade Value Chart normalizes player values across all 8 sports so you can compare a rookie pick to an established veteran.
Future picks. Future draft picks are typically discounted 20–30% from current-year values because of uncertainty (the pick could land anywhere in the round) and the time value of rostering a player now vs later. A future 1st is usually valued as a current early-to-mid 2nd.
Position scarcity. In dynasty rookie drafts, the 1.01 is almost always a top QB or RB because those positions are scarcest. Late first-round picks often land WRs and TEs, which are deeper positions. Adjust your valuations based on your league's starting lineup requirements.
