How fantasy scoring works

Fantasy scoring assigns point values to real-game stats. When a player performs well in a real game, their fantasy total is calculated by multiplying each stat by its point value and summing the results.

For example, in standard NFL fantasy scoring: 300 passing yards × 0.04 = 12 points, 3 passing TDs × 4 = 12 points, 1 interception × -2 = -2 points. Total: 22 fantasy points.

Each sport has different stats and point values. Use the sport selector above to see the scoring rules for NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and NASCAR. When you create a league on Fantasy365, you can customize every scoring rule to match your league's format.

Fantasy scoring formats explained

Points-Based

Each stat has a point value. Player totals are summed for a single fantasy point score. Used in NFL, NBA, NHL, and NASCAR. Head-to-head matchups compare total points.

Category-Based

Tracks raw counting stats (HR, RBI, SB, etc.) across categories. Wins are awarded per category in head-to-head matchups. Common in MLB roto and NBA cat leagues.

Rotisserie (Roto)

Season-long standings ranked across all categories. No weekly head-to-head matchups — teams accumulate stats all season and are ranked in each category.

NFL Fantasy Scoring Rules

Standard NFL fantasy scoring assigns point values to passing, rushing, receiving, and turnover stats. The default values below reflect a half-PPR format — the most common scoring system for seasonal fantasy football leagues.

Default NFL scoring point values:

StatPoint Value
Passing Yards+0.04
Passing TDs+4
Interceptions-2
Rushing Yards+0.1
Rushing TDs+6
Receptions+0.5
Receiving Yards+0.1
Receiving TDs+6

PPR (Point Per Reception) gives 1.0 point per reception; half-PPR gives 0.5; standard gives 0. Adjust the rec value in your league settings to match your format.

MLB Fantasy Scoring Rules

MLB fantasy scoring rewards hitters for hits, home runs, RBIs, runs, and stolen bases, while pitchers earn points for innings pitched, strikeouts, wins, saves, and quality starts. Strikeouts by batters and earned runs allowed are negative.

Default MLB scoring point values:

StatPoint Value
Singles+1
Doubles+2
Triples+3
Home Runs+4
RBIs+1
Runs+1
Stolen Bases+2
Walks+1
HBP+1
Strikeouts (batter)-1

Baseball scoring can be points-based (shown here) or category-based (rotisserie). In roto leagues, you track raw counting stats instead of computed points.

NBA Fantasy Scoring Rules

NBA fantasy scoring rewards points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks, with bonuses for three-pointers, double-doubles, and triple-doubles. Turnovers are penalized. This is a points-based format common in daily and season-long leagues.

Default NBA scoring point values:

StatPoint Value
Points+1
Rebounds+1.2
Assists+1.5
Steals+3
Blocks+3
Turnovers-1
3-Pointers Made+1
2PM+0.5
Double-Doubles+5
Triple-Doubles+10

Category-based NBA leagues (head-to-head categories) track raw stats like 3PM, REB, AST, STL, BLK instead of computed fantasy points.

NHL Fantasy Scoring Rules

NHL fantasy scoring rewards skaters for goals, assists, power-play points, short-handed goals, shots on goal, hits, and blocked shots. Goalies earn points for wins and saves, with penalties for losses and goals against. Shutouts earn a bonus.

Default NHL scoring point values:

StatPoint Value
Goals+3
Assists+2
Power-Play Points+1
Short-Handed Goals+2
Shots on Goal+0.5
Hits+0.5
Blocked Shots+0.5
Wins (goalie)+3
Losses (goalie)-1
OTL0
Saves+0.2
Goals Against-1
Shutouts+3

Hockey scoring can be points-based (shown here) or category-based. Skater and goalie stats are tracked separately.

NASCAR Fantasy Scoring Rules

NASCAR fantasy scoring rewards drivers for race points earned in the actual race, with bonuses for wins, top-5 and top-10 finishes, laps led, pole position, and stage wins. This format mirrors the real NASCAR points system with fantasy bonuses layered on top.

Default NASCAR scoring point values:

StatPoint Value
Race Points+1
Wins+10
Top 5 Finishes+5
Top 10 Finishes+3
Laps Led+0.1
Pole Position+2
Stage Wins+3

NASCAR scoring is inherently points-based since the real sport awards finishing-order points. Fantasy bonuses reward strong finishes beyond just the base race points.

Customizing your league's scoring

Every league on Fantasy365 lets the commissioner customize scoring rules. You can change point values for any stat, add bonuses for milestones (300-yard passing games, 100-yard rushing games), and adjust penalties. Scoring changes apply to all future games — past results are recalculated automatically.

The most common customization is PPR format for NFL leagues: standard (0 points per reception), half-PPR (0.5 points), and full PPR (1.0 points). PPR increases the value of pass-catching running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends, creating a more balanced scoring environment across positions.

For dynasty and keeper leagues, scoring consistency across seasons matters. Locking in your scoring rules at league creation prevents mid-season disputes and ensures keeper values remain stable year over year.
